In June 2012, we tested children on their phonic for the first time, following the introduction of a Phonics Screening test by the Government. The children are tested on 40 words, which use the phonics they have learnt in Reception and Year One. The words are a mixture of 'real' words and 'alien' words. The reason for the 'alien' words is because the Government believe that phonics is the main way that children should learn to read and want to ensure the children are not reading by sight but decoding unknown words.
The pass mark is 32 or above out of 40.
